Functional Manual Therapy®: A Comprehensive Patient Management System
presented by Gregory S. Johnson & Vicky Saliba Johnson

How does an integrated systems approach facilitate resolution of pain, optimum recovery, and maximum functional potential? Gregory S. Johnson and Vicky Saliba Johnson, founders of the Institute of Physical Art and co-developers of Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT), answer this question by defining and applying the mechanical capacity, neuromuscular function, and motor control pillars of FMT to real world therapy scenarios. This course begins with a short introduction to FMT by Vicky Johnson. Gregg and Vicky then discuss the underlying science and rationale behind each pillar and the integrated assessment and treatment progression. The course then instructs the participant in the purpose and utilization of two IPA Functional Tests, the Vertical Compression Test and the Elbow Flexion Test. The information in this course will prepare the participant to better extrapolate clinical reasoning and skills from the following patient demonstration courses and follow the seamless progression, integrating the three FMT pillars into an interdependent regional approach of patient care.

This course is part of a six-part series with Gregg and Vicky Johnson, which is designed to provide the participant with a working understanding of the FMT system of patient care through live patient demonstrations and lectures to support the clinical reasoning behind the progression of treatment and skills used:

Motor Control: Principles of CoreFirst® Strategies for Posture and Movement
presented by Vicky Saliba Johnson

In this course, Vicky Saliba Johnson works with Kristin (a patient experiencing difficulties with her core strength following an injury) and assesses her Automatic Core Engagement and alignment using the Functional Tests of Vertical Compression and Elbow Flexion Tests. The demonstration progresses from sitting training to active sitting and weight acceptance to standing alignment training. The pre and post test demonstrate the effectiveness of the motor control training.

Understanding the Interconnectivity of the Body's Connective Tissues and Articulations and Their Interdependency for Efficient Function
presented by Gregory S. Johnson

How can manual therapy address the needs of complex patients following acute injury or given chronic conditions? In this course, Gregory S. and Vicky Saliba Johnson, founders of the Institute of Physical Art and creators of the Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT) approach, answer this question by defining and applying the mechanical pillar of their Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT) approach to actual patient care. The course demonstrates the application of mechanical assessment and treatment techniques through management of a chronic pain patient with complex mechanical impairments.

The Functional Manual Therapy® Approach to the Pelvic Girdle
presented by Gregory S. Johnson

This course introduces the Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT) paradigm for the management of pelvic girdle dysfunctions. The pelvic girdle is an important link in the kinetic chain, influencing function and symptoms of structures in other regions. The fundamentals of this system are demonstrated through the management of a complex pain patient. Gregory S. Johnson progresses the viewer through the subjective and objective evaluation. A systematic and individualized treatment plan and progression is presented for the management of this patient’s pelvic girdle dysfunctions, as well as an evaluation for system-wide functional enhancements, which result from the FMT intervention.
