Sports Performance and Injury Prevention
presented by Phil Plisky

Video Runtime: 67 Minutes; Learning Assessment Time: 34 Minutes

While rehabilitation providers care about injury prevention, researchers tell us that athletes and coaches are more likely to participate in activities that can improve performance. Can we do both? Join Phil Plisky in this Sports Performance and Injury Prevention course as he covers the latest research in injury risk factors and prevention programs. This course dives into the concept of systematic injury prevention and the practical application of injury prevention systems that can also enhance sports performance. This course concludes by addressing the challenging topic of getting buy-in from your coaches and players. Case studies, a question-and-answer session, and immersive graphics help demonstrate the key concepts of this course designed to enable physical therapists and athletic trainers to effectively design and implement group injury prevention programs for their athletes. This course is for physical therapists, athletic trainers, and occupational therapists. Learn more

Exertional Heat Illness: Advanced Analysis of Extrinsic Risk Factors
presented by Susan Yeargin

Video Runtime: 74 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 39 Minutes

Research on EHI has been increasing over the last decade, but a gap of how to translate results to prevention strategies and policies may exist. Research evaluating common predisposing factors will be reviewed to develop focused prevention strategies for EHI in active populations. Constructing the framework of prevention policies for EHI is provided throughout the course. Extrinsic risk factors within the categories of organizational and environmental factors will be covered in this course. Learn more

presented by John Snyder

Video Runtime: 141 Minutes; Learning Assessment Time: 50 Minutes

This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from standard MedBridge courses.

The evaluation and rehabilitation of hip injuries in the athlete is a complicated and often misunderstood area of sports medicine. Over the course of the past five years, significant strides have been made in adding some clarity (and in some cases adding to confusion) to diagnosis and treatment of athletic groin pain. We will take you through an evidence-based evaluation of groin injuries with an emphasis on femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and athletic pubalgia. By understanding the current literature, you will be better able to simplify your evaluation and clinical reasoning when an athlete presents with groin pain. Learn more

The Athlete’s Hip: Return to Sport
presented by John Snyder

Return to sport is a very complicated decision, and for pathologies of the hip, this becomes even more convoluted due to the paucity of research in this region. Multiple factors can influence readiness for return to sport, from fear of reinjury to performance during functional testing. These factors will be discussed in an easy-to-implement framework to aid the clinician’s confidence in returning their athlete with hip pain to sport.

The recommended order to take the courses in The Athlete’s Hip series is as follows:

  • The Athlete’s Hip: Screening & Evaluation of Posterolateral Hip Pain
  • The Athlete’s Hip: Evaluation of Groin Pain
  • The Athlete’s Hip: Treatment of Hip Pathology
  • The Athlete’s Hip: Return to Sport

Return to Sport and Discharge Testing

    • Discharge and Return to Sport Part 1: Know When They Are Ready
    • Discharge and Return to Sport Part 2: Lower Body
    • Discharge and Return to Sport Part 3: Upper Body

    • Phil Plisky presents this course on return to sport and discharge testing. Do you want to be more scientific with your return to sport and discharge decisions? Do you want to focus more on injury prevention but don’t have the time or resources? Unfortunately, researchers have decisively found that previous injury is the number one risk factor for future injury and that modifiable motor control risk factors remain after rehabilitation. Fortunately, evidenced based tests exist to identify these risk factors and improve your confidence when making return to sport and discharge decisions. Further, these tests can be easily incorporated into clinical practice. You can dramatically impact your patient’s health and reduce re-injury rates by making evidence-based, return to sport and discharge decisions. Dr. Plisky presents such measures including the Upper and Lower Quarter Y-Balance Tests, Functional Movement Screen, and Hop Testing. Watch these tests in action through a collegiate athlete case study while learning how to dramatically impact the health of your patients and reduce re-injury rates. Learn more
