Brain injury and/or stroke can cause a multitude of visual problems. This course will help the generalist working with clients, who may have vision loss, determine basic visual field problems as well as coming up with basic treatment options. We will discuss ways to determine what type of scanning pattern a client is using and improve scanning techniques. This will help your clients to compensate for decreased visual field and improve independence with IADLs.

Marlene graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1996 with a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy. She began working in the low vision field in 2007 and has worked in various settings, including university practice, nonprofit, and now private practice. This chapter will describe observations that determine if someone has a vision impairment versus a cognitive impairment.

This chapter will demonstrate how to perform a basic visual field cut evaluation. Participants will assemble the needed tools for completing a visual field assessment and learn how to perform and interpret visual field evaluation.

3. Treatment Ideas for Brain Injury Patients with Visual Impairments

This chapter will demonstrate several treatment tools that can be used to help your patient with a visual field cut use proper scanning techniques.
