What's the difference between dysphagia and a normal, aging swallow? The aging swallow has specific characteristics which are distinct from and should not be confused with dysphagia. It is true, however, that dysphagia becomes more prevalent as we age and that aging may in some ways pre-dispose us to swallowing difficulties. This course will describe changes in swallowing and supporting systems in the elderly that may contribute to dysphagia and allow clinicians to distinguish between normal aging and swallow dysfunction. Specifically, this course reviews pneumonia and its implications, including types of pneumonia, pulmonary clearance mechanisms and the effects of pneumonia on those systems, and risk factors for pneumonia. The course concludes with a discussion of real world case scenarios involving pneumonia management.

1. Pneumonia and Pneumonia Types
The first chapter of this course reviews and differentiates between pneumonia types including community acquired, nosocomial and aspiration pneumonias. Chest Xray terminology will also be reviewed.
2. Pulmonary Clearance Mechanisms
This chapter describes mechanisms for pulmonary clearance including cough, muco-ciliary clearance, and cellular clearance mechanisms. It also explains these mechanism’s role in the body’s response to aspiration.
3. Risk Factors for Pneumonia
Chapter three reviews the evidence for risk factors for pneumonia in the elderly with a variety of co-morbidities. This chapter will also assist the clinician in distinguishing between modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors to facilitate treatment planning.
4. Case Review
The final chapter of this course discusses several case examples that apply course concepts to real-world clinical scenarios.
