In this course, Dr. Robert LaPrade, a complex knee surgeon & sports medicine specialist at The Steadman Clinic in Vail and Chief Medical Research Officer of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute will take you through a review of superficial bony and soft tissue landmarks of the knee, as well as the deep anatomy of the medial and lateral aspects of the knee. He will demonstrate a deep dissection to visualize the course of the cruciate ligaments, the medial and lateral menisci, and their interactions with each other. Upon completion of the course, learners will have an understanding of over a dozen high level peer-reviewed publications on the qualitative and quantitative anatomy of the knee. Physical examination skills and knowledge of elementary knee biomechanics will also be strengthened.

Dr. Robert F. LaPrade is an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon who joined The Steadman Clinic in 2010 and specializes in the treatment of complex knee injuries. Chapters & Learning Objectives

1. Introduction

Dr. LaPrade provides a brief background of his of his experience researching and working with complex knee injuries and introduces the goals and objectives of the course.

2. Superficial Landmarks of the Knee

This chapter reviews the bony and soft tissue landmarks of the knee. Knowledge of these important landmarks can assist in making proper treatment decisions for nonoperative and postoperative rehabilitation treatment.

3. Lateral and Posterolateral Knee Structures

This module reviews the superficial and deep anatomy of the posterolateral aspect of the knee and demonstrates the anatomic course and main biomechanical function of these main structures.

4. Medial and Posteromedial Structures of the Knee

This module reviews the main anatomic structures of the medial knee, their attachment sites and implications to healing and treatment depending on which area of the knee where a structure may be injured, and reviews the biomechanical and clinical examination implications to injuries to these individual structures.

5. Intra-articular Structures of the Knee

This module reviews the location of the articular cartilage, medial and lateral menisci, and the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. A review of their normal anatomic location can assist with an understanding of knee injuries and their treatment.

6. Summary of Knee Anatomy Dissection

Knowledge of anatomy is the key to understanding all aspects of the knee. One who understands the location and courses of the main structures of the knee has a much better understanding of how to diagnose, properly treat, and to properly rehabilitate knee injuries.
