This course will review the application and parameters for the successful use of neuromuscular electrical nerve stimulation in the clinical setting. Highlights will include avoiding typical pitfalls in the application of NMES. Troubleshooting will include electrode selection and placement, number of channels, pulse width and rate, and the duty cycle. Examples will be demonstrated of applications and successful troubleshooting during these applications. The applicable audience includes PTs, PTAs, OT, COTAs, and ATCs.

Pam Kikillus, PT, DHSc, OCS, CHT, FAAOMPT

Pam Kikillus received her entry-level physical therapy degree and a Doctor of Health Science degree from the University of Indianapolis. She is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist, a certified hand therapist, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. This chapter will provide a review of NMES terminology and meanings. It will explain indications for successful NMES use and situations in which NMES is not indicated.

2. NMES Variables: Examples in Action

This chapter will provide examples and demonstrations of the NMES variables in action. Specific examples of electrode selection and placement, pulse width, and rate will be provided.

3. Troubleshooting for Success

This chapter will provide demonstrations of the inadequate application of NMES. There will be explanations for decisions in the troubleshooting process. Demonstrations will then be done after the correct adjustments have been implemented.
