Restraint Reduction in Hospice Facilities

This course addresses safe use of restraint and seclusion in hospice facilities. It discusses when restraint and seclusion are allowed in hospice facilities and effective alternatives that staff can use to avoid triggering situations that may require use of restraint and seclusion.

Chapter 2 covers the meaning of the terms "restraint" and "seclusion" and important considerations in deciding to use restraints and seclusion. Finally, the course provides guidelines for applying restraints and monitoring patients in restraint or seclusion and requirements in reporting any patient deaths associated with restraint or seclusion.

2) Describe strategies to avoid triggering situations for restraints or seclusion
3) Identify nonphysical interventions
4) Define restraints and seclusion
5) Explain key elements in safely using restraints

This course has been verified to align with the CHAP Hospice Standards of Excellence in Hospice Inpatient Care (HSIC). It was also designed in alignment with ACHC hospice standards, and it provides training to help organizations meet the following federal regulations related to hospice services:

• 42 C.F.R. § 418.110(o)

• 42 C.F.R. § 418.110(p)
