1. The Effects of Structural Anomalies on Speech or Resonance
In this chapter, the presenter will describe obligatory distortions and compensatory productions and why they can occur in cases of structural anomalies. The treatment of each will be explained.
2. Primary Palate: Effects of Lip and Nasal Cavity Anomalies on Speech and Resonance
In this chapter, the presenter will describe the effects of a short upper lip, stenosis of the nares, and nasal cavity anomalies on speech and resonance.
3. Primary Palate: Effects of Dental and Occlusal Anomalies on Speech
In this chapter, the presenter will review the dental and occlusal requirements for normal speech production. The presenter will list various dental anomalies and show how these anomalies can affect speech. Finally, the presenter will describe the types of malocclusion that can occur and how each type can affect speech.
4. Secondary Palate: Effects of Otologic Anomalies on Hearing and of VPI on Speech and Resonance
In this chapter, the presenter will discuss the increased risk for middle ear effusion in children with cleft palate and how this affects hearing. There will also be a brief description of the risk for VPI and its effect on speech and resonance.
