Certificate Program overview
Section 1
Putting the Fun in Function 4 ItemsPutting the 'FUN' in Functional: Dizziness, Mobility, and Transfers Course
Chapter 1: Upper Extremity Assessment and Treatment
In this chapter, participants will be given the tools to analyze abnormal movement patterns of the upper extremity, specifically with identifying muscle recruitment patterns and compensation strategies for movement. Special emphasis will be placed on learning neuromuscular re-education techniques for muscle recruitment and movement initiation, as well as on the construction of a home exercise program that will promote normal movement patterns of the upper extremity using visual and tactile cues.
Chapter 2: Dizziness Handicap Inventory, and Confirmation and Treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Join occupational therapist Danielle Keyser as she introduces and discusses the importance of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, the Dix-Hallpike Test for the confirmation of BPPV, and the Epley-maneuver for the treatment of BPPV. Upon completion of this chapter, participants should be able to recognize the indicators of vestibular dysfunction.
Chapter 3: Functional Mobility and Home Modifications for the Bathroom
Home modifications are essential for improving functional mobility in the geriatric patient. In this chapter, participants will learn the importance and clinical reasoning for home modifications prescribed to Hubert, our case study patient with a case of dizziness and immobility. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the reasoning for grab bar placement to decrease fall risk, safety precautions using suction cup grab bars, and information regarding how to access gross motor movements and areas for remediation with ambulation, tub bench transfer, and commode transfer.
Putting the 'FUN' in Functional: IADLs, Mobility, and Car Transfers Course
Chapter 1: Assessment and Evaluation
This chapter provides a strong foundation for assessing the patient David who has experienced difficulties with IADLs and mobility following a stroke. Danielle Keyser provides participants with the tools to recognize various UE/functional assessments and their functions. Tests to be discussed include the Functional Reach Test, Modified Barthel ADL Index, ROM testing, MMT, and evaluation of subluxed shoulder and UE tone assessments.
Chapter 2: Functional Treatment Activity
Using a hierarchy of cueing and prompting, learn how to grade a treatment activity to ensure the patient is working at their highest level of performance. In this chapter, occupational therapist Danielle Keyser provides useful strategies to identify motor planning, coordination, and problem-solving deficits and remediation strategies in food prep activity and how it generalizes to other ADL tasks.
Chapter 3: Community Mobility and Wrap-Up
In this chapter, participants will learn to identify patient mobility deficits and the level of assistance needed for participation in the community. Learn to recognize the signs of isolation, depression, and inactivity, and understand how these factors are attributed with physical disability and can further decrease functional performance.
Putting the 'FUN' in Functional: Pain Management, Environmental Safety, and Balance Course
Chapter 1: Background and Pain Assessment: Ecology of Human Performance (EHP)
In this chapter, participants will come to understand the importance of participation and client engagement for gathering information on occupational roles, insights, perceptions of disability and pain in order to narrow down a treatment focus. Learn to use the model of EHP, and recognize that task performance is an interaction between a person, their environment, and the meaning one attaches to a task.
Chapter 2: Balance Assessment and Balance Treatment Strategy: Motor Learning Theory
A thorough balance assessment calls upon the utilization of the TUG and 4 Square Step Test, which provide clients with information on any crucial deficit areas (balance/fall risk) they may have. In this chapter, participants will learn how to provide specific feedback to the client in relation to normative data and function. Keyser discusses the appropriate method in which to use the model of Motor Learning Theory, and recognize the principles of practice and feedback during treatment, both internally through the sensory system, and externally through visual and verbal cues.
Chapter 3: Functional Reach Test and Adaptive Equipment/Home Modification as a Treatment Strategy: Rehabilitation Frame of Reference
Occupational therapist Danielle Keyser instructs participants on how to correctly utilize the Functional Reach test for information on crucial deficit areas in balance and fall risk. Other topics to be discussed include instructions for using the Rehabilitation Frame of Reference, and recognizing the principle of independence through compensation with environmental modifications and adaptive devices.
Chapter 4: Home Exercise Program: Ecology of Human Performance and Motor Learning Theory
Why is a home exercise program useful, and how do you create one? In this chapter, Keyser highlights the essential information needed to create a home exercise program that integrates both motor learning theory and the EHP to increase participation. Upon completion, viewers will be able to recognize the importance of client participation and engagement in the treatment session, as well as the value of objective measures to gauge progress for successful outcomes.
Geriatric Rehabilitation: Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy Course
Chapter 1: The Roles of PT/OT in Geriatric Rehabilitation
In this chapter, participants will learn to verbalize the tenets that support the vision and framework of occupational therapy, understand how thorough evidence-based literature and practice principles (in this case principles for Alzheimer’s Disease) can be derived to guide the delivery of OT treatment, and become versed in five tests and measures that can be used in an OT evaluation.
Chapter 2: Literature Review
Literature has proven to be an effective tool for guiding therapy strategies across many disciplines. Occupational therapist Danielle Keyser teaches participants how physical therapy intervention can enhance the rehabilitation program of each case study participant by providing the tools to analyze the occupational therapy treatment delivery of each case, and recognizing how the use of occupation based tasks improve function. Participants should seek to analyze the occupational therapy treatment delivery of each case study participant, and recognize how the use of objective tests and measures would be able to prove the efficacy of OT treatment.
Chapter 3: Assessing Some Tools of the Trade
Join Danielle Keyser as she encourages clinicians’ creativity to use everyday items to improve function and independence. Keyser provides resources for inexpensive adaptive equipment, and emphasizes how affordable patient rehabilitation approaches can be.
