ED PT Practice: Foundations for Emergency Department Care

Presented by Rebekah Griffith

People gather around a table with medical tools and devices, discussing hybrid care and medbridge patient software.

Description

Despite growing evidence supporting the integration of physical therapists in emergency department (ED) settings, many physical therapists and healthcare administrators lack foundational knowledge about the unique systems, workflows, patient populations, and interdisciplinary dynamics that define emergency care. Additionally, there is limited awareness of how social determinants of health, payer structures, and healthcare access limitations intersect with ED utilization. This gap results in underutilization of physical therapists in the ED, inconsistent program models, and a failure to align services with department goals, ultimately impacting patient outcomes and care efficiency.
