Communication challenges are a leading cause for behavioral difficulties.This course, Is It Sensory or Is It Behavior? Part 3: Communication-Based Behaviors, provides an overview of the common behaviors associated with communication-based problems. Using the Intervention for Challenging Behavior (ICB) form, we will review obtaining and avoiding social/communication behaviors and begin to identify intervention strategies and considerations for each. Video case studies will be used for analyzing communication-based behaviors and to demonstrate the effectiveness of intervention strategies.

1. Social/Communication-Based Behaviors: Overview

This chapter reviews the Intervention for Challenging Behavior (ICB) form and distinguishes the social and communication functions of behavior. We will review obtaining and avoiding communication-based behaviors and discuss those individuals at high risk. This will help clinicians understand the underlying behavioral issues and design targeted interventions.

2. Social/Communication Based Behaviors: Avoidance Behaviors

This chapter looks at social/communication-based avoidance behaviors and distinguishes between attention based behaviors and those aimed at avoiding a task, object or activity. The causes for task avoidance will be studied in depth and a strategy for analyzing and differentiating will be reviewed. This chapter gives the professional a foundation for implementing a targeted intervention program.

3. Social/Communication-Based Behaviors: Obtaining Behaviors

This chapter looks at social/communication-based obtaining behaviors and distinguishes between attention based behaviors (positive and negative) and those aimed at obtaining a task, object, or activity. This chapter gives the professional a foundation for implementing a targeted intervention program and provides a guideline for improving communication and altering behavior.
