As human beings we share many of the same basic needs, but how these needs are best met can differ drastically across populations and between individuals. This course provides resources and practical guidance to help you to meet diverse needs and provide a culturally competent experience during care. Tools for working with the following communities will be covered: cultural, religious, and spiritual; LGBTQ+; mobility disability; speech impairment; deaf and hard of hearing; blind and low vision; limited English proficiency; and low health literacy. The key tips in this course are also provided as a linked document to take with you and reference as needed.
Course Objectives
1) Define culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) and cultural competency
2) Present tools and resources to promote an inclusive workplace and provide person-centered care
3) Apply contextual information to assist with working with individuals from selected groups: cultural, religious, and spiritual; LGBTQ+; mobility disability; speech impairment; deaf and hard of hearing; blind and low vision; limited English proficiency; and low health literacy
4) Discuss when and how to best work with medical interpreters
5) Introduce the teach-back method as an actionable strategy to confirm patient understanding
6) Examine structural initiatives that can help organizations pursue cultural competency and health equity
This course was designed to help organizations in all settings meet their requirements for providing person-centered care outlined by The Joint Commission, ACHC, CHAP, CMS, and the Affordable Care Act. It has also been certified by ACHC, and verified to align with the CHAP Hospice Standards of Excellence HCPC.21.I in Hospice Assessment, Care Planning and Coordination, and it provides training to help organizations meet the following federal regulations related to hospice, home health and long-term care services: Estimated Runtime: 22 minutes
