Chapters & learning objectives
1. Mechanisms of Injury and Risk Factors
This chapter will convey the documented high rate of first time and recurrence hamstring strain rates reported internationally in a wide range of professional and amateur sports. Will also discuss common mechanisms of injury for hamstring strain and possible risk factors.
2. Differential Diagnosis
This chapter aims to discuss the differential diagnosis of a hamstring strain. We will examine the use of MRI for grading hamstring strains and introduce a practical muscle imaging tool for determining the severity of injury.
3. Principles of Rehabilitation
This chapter aims to discuss principles of rehabilitation for hamstring strains. While emphasizing the pathology of the healing muscle, we will review each phase of the rehabilitation and provide clinical milestones to progress on to ensuing phases. We will also establish the traditional method of treatment of an acute hamstring strain, discuss a new lengthened-state eccentric dynamometer-based rehabilitation strategy for isolating the injured hamstring, and provide a clinical study for this new rehabilitation technique.
4. Prevention and Return to Play
The objective of this chapter introduces a new lengthened-state eccentric dynamometer-based rehabilitation strategy for isolating the injured hamstring to prevent re-occurrences, and objectively determining when an athlete is ready to return to play. To conclude the course, we'll examine the use of MRI, lengthened state curves and other special tests when evaluating return to play.
