In this course, home health aides will explore how to recognize normal versus abnormal age-related changes, understand the effects of chronic illness, and provide compassionate, culturally competent care. By applying concepts directly to real-life scenarios, aides will practice communication, empathy, and safety strategies that protect patient dignity while meeting regulatory training requirements under §484.80 for home health aide education.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify normal physiological changes that occur with aging and distinguish them from pathological conditions
  2. Describe the physical impacts of common chronic illnesses in older adults and how they interact with the aging process
  3. Recognize signs of cognitive decline, depression, and anxiety, and understand the emotional impacts of illness on older adults
  4. Demonstrate effective communication strategies and empathetic interactions with patients and families
  5. Apply culturally competent care by acknowledging and respecting patients’ cultural, religious, and personal beliefs
  6. Support individualized care plans by observing and reporting changes in condition to the care team

This course was written in alignment with the CMS Conditions of Participation for Home Health: 42 CFR §484.80 (Home Health Aide Services) training expectations relevant to aide services (including tasks tied to nutrition/feeding assistance within the care plan).
