This course is one of several recordings from the Female Athlete Health Symposium, a previously hosted live, multi-lecture webinar event. In this session, the primary instructor is introduced by another instructor who also facilitates the Q&A portion. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard Medbridge courses.

Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is a complex condition with widespread impacts on athlete health and performance. PTs and ATCs are uniquely positioned to identify REDs early, yet many clinicians report uncertainty about screening approaches, referral processes, and multidisciplinary management. This webinar provides PTs and ATCs with actionable strategies to integrate REDs awareness into everyday practice. Through case-based examples, learners will apply validated screening tools, identify key clinical red flags, and explore the unique role of PTs and ATCs within a collaborative care team. Special emphasis will be placed on building referral pathways, modifying rehabilitation or training loads while awaiting specialist input, and communicating effectively with coaches, physicians, and dietitians. Whether practicing in outpatient orthopedics, sports medicine, or the athletic training room, clinicians will leave this session better equipped to support athletes across various settings, from middle school to professional sports.

Learning Objectives
  • Apply validated tools and clinical reasoning to recognize REDs risk in athletes across practice settings
  • Integrate PT and ATC roles within a multidisciplinary care model for REDs management
  • Implement appropriate referral strategies for athletes demonstrating REDs risk factors
  • Modify training and rehabilitation strategies to support athletes while awaiting multidisciplinary care

Chapters & learning objectives

Recognizing REDs in Clinical Practice

1. Recognizing REDs in Clinical Practice

This chapter focuses on how REDs presents in the clinic and training room. Learners will review clinical red flags, validated LEA screening tools, and performance-based markers. Case vignettes will be used to reinforce recognition skills.

The Multidisciplinary Team in REDs

2. The Multidisciplinary Team in REDs

This chapter will discuss mapping the roles of each team member (PT, ATC, physician, dietitian, psychologist, and coach), emphasizing scope boundaries and effective communication strategies to promote collaborative care.

From Screening to Action: Referrals and Early Management

3. From Screening to Action: Referrals and Early Management

In this chapter, we’ll translate screening results into practical action. Learners will develop referral strategies, learn how to address sensitive topics, and explore modifications to training and rehab that support the athlete while awaiting specialist input.

Question and Answer Session

4. Question and Answer Session

This chapter includes a viewer-submitted Q&A session with questions answered by Christine Morgan and facilitated by Barb Hoogenboom.
