Sleep disturbances are common after a concussion and can significantly impact recovery. This course introduces cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques to improve sleep quality. Participants will learn to assess sleep issues, apply behavioral interventions, and guide patients toward better sleep hygiene. This course provides practical tools for addressing postconcussion sleep challenges.
Learning Objectives
- Apply an evidence-based evaluation framework, including the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Sleep Disorders Symptom Checklist (SDS-CL-25), to assess sleep disturbances in individuals with a concussion symptom profile modifier of sleep
- Analyze the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and their application in concussion rehabilitation
- Determine appropriate intervention priorities, including sleep restriction, sleep hygiene, and behavioral modifications, based on patient needs and clinical presentation
- Implement structured intervention strategies using case-based learning to facilitate sleep restoration and improve patient outcomes
- Plan interdisciplinary referral pathways for complex sleep disturbances while recognizing the scope of practice for OT, PT, SLP, and AT in sleep intervention

Chapters & learning objectives

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) Overview
This chapter reviews the impact of sleep disturbances after concussion and introduces the principles of CBT-I. Participants will learn evidence-based sleep strategies, including sleep restriction, sleep efficiency training, and environmental modifications.

2. Evaluation
This chapter covers assessment tools for sleep issues, including the CP Screen, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Participants will learn to identify red flags and determine when to refer to specialists.

3. Intervention: Case Study
Through a case study, this chapter demonstrates how to apply CBT-I techniques, track progress with sleep logs, and adjust interventions. It highlights clinical decision-making, patient education, and long-term sleep management strategies.

4. Summary
This chapter summarizes overarching ideas implemented during case study evaluations and interventions. Activity analysis and the CO-OP approach of “goal, plan, do, check” is used to help move a person toward sleep restoration and a return of their life roles and identity.
