In the realm of physical therapy, the concept of functional strength training has gained significant recognition as an essential component of rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance enhancement. Functional strength training emphasizes exercises that mimic real-life movements and activities, aiming to improve overall functional capacity and movement quality. The squat is arguably one of the two most functional components of everyday life. There is a pressing need for physical therapists to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in functional strength training, and most physical therapists’ education inadequately prepares them to coach the squat for a wide range of individuals.
Learning Outcomes
- Evaluate the principles of functional anatomy, biomechanics, and motor control underlying functional strength training exercises
- Analyze the mechanics of the squat
- Categorize movement faults of the squat using testing
- Plan interventions to correct/modify movement faults
- Apply knowledge of progression/regressions to two cases

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Foundations and Assessment of Functional Strength Training
This chapter will define functional strength training and provide information about why it is important, dosage, injury rates, and normative values.
2. Squat Mechanics, Types, and Faults
This chapter will delve into the breakdown of squat movements, different types of squats with different demands, and common movement faults. Understanding these elements is crucial for creating safe and effective exercise programs tailored to individual capabilities and goals.
3. Improving the Squat and Modifications of the Squat
This chapter demonstrates identifying causes of movement faults and matching impairments to correct these causes. We will also discuss many options for modifying the squat when correcting these is not an option.
4. Squat Analysis and Correction in Application
In this chapter, we will apply our knowledge to three cases from start to finish, taking into account all the needs of the client.
5. Question and Answer Session
This chapter is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by Elizabeth Lane.
