This course will outline clinical and counseling considerations for best practices in intervention for laryngeal dystonia. It is imperative that treating clinicians fully understand not only the basics of available treatment options for these complex patients but also the benefits, drawbacks, and limitations for each treatment option. This foundation is necessary to comprehensively educate patients on all aspects of treatment options in order to optimize outcomes and to allow patients to make informed treatment decisions as a team member in their treatment plan. This course will also identify foundations in effective counseling for patients on significant quality-of-life detriments that occur with a chronic voice disorder, as this is imperative particularly in the context of limited treatment options, treatments that may not be fully effective, or treatments that may lead to additional undesired or unanticipated side effects before or alongside treatment benefits.
Learning Objectives
- Distinguish patient-related factors that drive clinical decision-making in laryngeal dystonia
- Identify treatment limitations and complexities for current treatment methods for laryngeal dystonia
- Determine how to appropriately individualize treatment for optimized intervention outcomes for patients with laryngeal dystonia
- Outline psychosocial effects of laryngeal dystonia
- Apply tenets of effective counseling for this population

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Clinical Decision-Making Considerations: Treatment Limitations and Individualizing TreatmentÂ
This chapter will identify patient-centered factors important in effective clinical decision-making for the laryngeal dystonia population. With limited treatment options and in the context of a chronic voice disorder, it is imperative to take patient perspectives on treatment course into account, to be able to communicate appropriate expectations for optimized intervention, and to maintain a true patient-centered approach.
2. Clinical Decision-Making Considerations: Patient-Centered Factors
This chapter will identify treatment limitations, complexities, and drawbacks for current treatment methods of laryngeal dystonia, including the gold standard of treatment and behavioral intervention, in an easily digestible manner. This chapter will additionally identify ways to appropriately individualize treatment (including understanding the SLP’s role in medical management in conjunction with the laryngologist) for optimized intervention outcomes within a patient-centered care model.
3. Psychosocial Considerations: Counseling
This chapter will outline common psychosocial effects of laryngeal dystonia that affect quality of life or serve as treatment barriers and will explain tenets of effective counseling for this population.
