Working together with families, the interprofessional team of therapists and educational professionals can identify community programs that meet the child’s desired leisure activities, measure participation in activities and develop advocacy plans for successfully involving their child in community-based activities. This course is designed to introduce instruments that measure participation and explore community-based activities that would positively impact the physical, mental and social well-being of children and adolescents with disabilities.

Health and Participation

1. Health and Participation

In this chapter we'll discuss the historical perspective of the ICF model as it relates to human rights of children, particularly children and youth with disabilities. Following an examination of the ICF framework and the application to children, we'll evaluate the role of participation for children and youth with disabilities.

Measurement of Participation for Children and Youth

2. Measurement of Participation for Children and Youth

In this chapter we'll examine strategies to impact contextual factors influencing participation. By comparing the role of team members in identifying contextual factors, we'll be able to analyze the factors that influence participation within the ICF framework as it applies to children and youth with disabilities.

Targeting Participation

3. Targeting Participation

This course will end with identifying strategies to overcome the barriers and embrace facilitators to participation. Participants will be able to evaluate perceived barriers to children and youth with disabilities participating in community-based programs. We'll end the course with a question and answer session with various youth participants with disabilities.
