There is a growing problem of violence against caregivers in home-based care. In a recent survey, over 20% of caregivers reported violence at the hands of clients in the previous year, and over 30% during the course of their careers. Violence causes acute and long-term physical and emotional injury, leading to burnout, turnover, and poor patient care. Home-based care leaders need to understand the risk to individuals and the agency and options to improve safety.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the five pillars of safety defined by the NAHC’s call to action
- Recognize the role of culture in safety
- Highlight the challenges of communicating about safety and risk in agency
