This course highlights both the Texas Medical Privacy Act (Texas House Bill 300) and the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). You will review what protected health information (PHI) is and how it can be used and disclosed as well as patient rights related to PHI. The course also covers data security for electronic health information and what you can do to avoid PHI violations. Finally, you will learn about reporting data breaches and potential penalties.
This course meets the regulatory standards outlined in the Texas Health Code Chap. 181, known as the Texas Medical Records Privacy Act, as amended by Texas HB 300. It also satisfies HIPAA; Pub.L. 104-191, 110 Stat. 1936.
