Chapters & learning objectives
1. Assessment
This chapter will outline the components of an assessment. The assessment includes taking a history from the parent which includes early feeding patterns, medical history, and any current issues related to breathing. Mobilization of the rib cage, breathing patterns, postural alignment, and muscle usage will be explored. At the end of the assessment, the findings will be explained.
2. Case Study: Child With Down Syndrome - History
This chapter will demonstrate how to take a history from a parent of a child with Down syndrome. The history will include medical issues as an infant or young child. The child’s current medical status will also be explored. Any significant findings will be explained.
3. Case Study: Child With Down Syndrome - Assessment
This chapter will demonstrate an assessment followed by an explanation of the findings. The assessment will include determining the predominant breathing pattern, rib mobility, and muscle usage. Compensatory muscle usage patterns will be explained.
4. Case Study: Child With Asthma - History
This chapter will demonstrate how to take a history from a parent of a child with asthma. The history will include how frequently the child experiences breathing challenges and the current management of the episodes. The child’s current medical status will be explored. Any significant findings will be explained.
5. Case Study: Child With Asthma - Assessment
This chapter will demonstrate an assessment followed by an explanation of the findings for a child with asthma. The assessment will include determining the predominant breathing pattern, rib mobility, and muscle usage. Any compensatory breathing patterns that are demonstrated by the child will be explained. Suggestions for home programming and treatment will be addressed if applicable.
