This course focuses on nursing skills needed to identify immunocompromised renal patients and formulate therapeutic interventions for them. Understanding the differences regarding infection signs and symptoms between immunocompromised and un-compromised patients is critical. Information on neutropenia along with factors that contribute to immunosuppression and anti-rejection medications are reviewed. This course is appropriate for nurses working in any setting, but particularly targets acute care, long-term, home health care, and inpatient rehabilitation.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Understanding the Immune System and Immunosuppression
Nurses need to understand and recognize the different and subtle signs/symptoms of an immunocompromised patient. The first chapter of this course provides a brief review of the immune system and how immunosuppression is needed for renal transplant patients.
2. Factors Affecting Immunity and Therapeutic Interventions
Early identification and effective interventions of infection, neutropenia, renal failure, medication effects, and other variables can impact your patient’s survival. Application of therapeutic interventions is discussed. This chapter provides information on the factors that affect immunity and how appropriate interventions can help facilitate a quick recovery time for your patient.
3. Case Study of Immunocompromised Patient
This chapter will provide a case study of an immunocompromised renal patient after transplant. Nursing education regarding chronic and end-stage renal disease along with therapeutic interventions will be applied.
