This short, scenario-based interactive course prepares hospice aides to recognize and respond to signs of pain and discomfort in patients who may not be able to express how they are feeling. Aides will learn to identify behavioral and nonverbal cues, understand what comfort measures fall within their scope of practice, and know when and how to report changes to the nurse or supervisor. We’ll follow Jordan, a hospice aide supporting Mr. Thompson and his family, through a real-world scenario where cultural beliefs about pain management and nonverbal signs of discomfort both come into play.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify behavioral and nonverbal signs of pain or discomfort in hospice patients
  2. Describe the aide’s role in observing and asking about comfort, within your scope of practice
  3. Implement nonpharmacological comfort measures that are allowed by the aide care plan
  4. Recognize how cultural beliefs can shape a patient’s response to pain and symptoms
  5. Identify symptoms that require immediate reporting to the nurse or supervisor
This course was written in alignment with the CMS Conditions of Participation for Hospice: 42 CFR §418.52 (Patient Rights) and §418.76 (Hospice Aide and Homemaker Services) training expectations relevant to aide services (including tasks tied to comfort measures and symptom observation within the care plan):
