Helping Families Understand Patient Decline in Pediatric Hospice
Presented by Joan “Jody” Chrastek and Clinical Procedure Manual Review Board
This training focuses on the difficult task of communicating effectively with parents who are struggling to accept their child's terminal decline. Because pediatric patients are often resilient and may recover from multiple close calls, families frequently develop a hard-earned hope that complicates their acceptance of the final stages of death. Designed for hospice and palliative care nurses operating in home or inpatient settings, this course addresses how to bridge the gap between clinical reality and parental hope without causing information toxicity. Students will learn to assess a family's information needs, respect cultural dynamics regarding decision-making, and navigate parental resistance to painful truths. Take this course to master the skill of "telling the truth in love" and become equipped to guide parents in making their own observations about their child's physical changes, ultimately facilitating a more peaceful, comfort-focused end-of-life transition.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the importance of allowing families to make observations of the decline in the child
- Differentiate how compassionate interventions can avoid defensive reactions from the family
- Highlight the need to accept a family's refusal to accept the decline
