Medication review is a necessary part of the chart review for any evaluation, especially dysphagia. Medications can contribute to/exacerbate a patient’s dysphagia. However, our training in pharmacology may be minimal, at best. How do medications work, and what impact do they have on the swallow? This two part presentation will provide you with basic knowledge about absorption and metabolism of medications, intended and unintended impact of medications, physiologic changes in the older adult, and possible interactions of drugs, herbs and foods. Specific disorders and the most common medications for each will be reviewed with potential side effects. You will leave this program with resources to use for a medication review.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Older Adult and Physiologic Changes
As we age, physiologic changes impact our health, increasing risk for decline in mobility, cognition, nutrition and diseases. Medication use increases, whether it is self-medication with over the counter products or increased use of prescriptions prescription drugs. These physiologic changes can impact the effect of medications.
2. Metabolism and Absorption of Medications
Medications differ in how they are administered, metabolized and absorbed in the body. This process varies based on the type of medication. The 3 P’s: pharmaceutic, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics are broken down to increase the understanding of how medications work.
3. CAM - Complementary Alternative Medicine
Many patients and families look for alternative treatment options to complement medications they currently take or to replace them. Herbs used to treat specific disorders/diseases are identified, with discussion of potential side effects.
