Medication review is a necessary part of the chart review for any evaluation, especially dysphagia. Medications can contribute to/exacerbate a patient’s dysphagia. Part two of this two part series describes intended and unintended impacts of medications, and possible interactions of drugs, herbs and foods. Specific disorders and the most common medications for each will be reviewed with potential side effects. Participants will leave this program with resources to use for a medication review.

Chapters & learning objectives

Impacts of Medications on Swallowing

1. Impacts of Medications on Swallowing

Our patients often take more than 3 medications per day. As they add medications, there is an increased risk of drug-drug and drug-food interactions. This chapter focuses on the impacts of medications on the swallowing process.

Resources and Case Studies

2. Resources and Case Studies

What does the impact of medications look like with patients? This chapter provides additional resources and reviews case examples that apply concepts from Part 1 and Part 2 of Pharmacology and Dysphagia.
