Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable neurodegenerative disease that can be challenging for providers to feel comfortable and confident in treating. Individuals with MS experience a wide variety of symptoms; this course focuses on the management of several of the more complex symptoms that are commonly found in patients with MS. The concepts of this course apply for all rehabilitation providers treating patients with MS in inpatient, outpatient, skilled nursing, and home health settings.

Learning Objectives
  • Recommend optimal methods to manage fatigue and heat sensitivity for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Consider factors that contribute to spasticity, and recognize short-term vs. long-term management options for patients with MS
  • Distinguish between different types of pain common in patients with MS and the use of conservative interventions for mitigating pain
  • Evaluate types of dizziness and strategies for rehabilitation for patients with MS

Chapters & learning objectives

Symptom Management: Fatigue and Heat Sensitivity

1. Symptom Management: Fatigue and Heat Sensitivity

Navigating the challenges of fatigue and heat sensitivity is a significant aspect of managing multiple sclerosis (MS). This chapter delves into the intricacies of these symptoms, exploring their underlying mechanisms, common triggers, and effective strategies for mitigation.

Symptom Management: Pain

2. Symptom Management: Pain

Pain management in MS is highly individualized and can vary significantly between patients and across the course of the disease. This chapter will focus on distinguishing between different types of pain common in patients with MS and the use of conservative interventions for mitigating pain.

Symptom Management: Spasticity

3. Symptom Management: Spasticity

Spasticity, a common and often debilitating symptom of MS, can significantly impact mobility, function, and quality of life. This chapter looks at evidence-based strategies for optimal management of spasticity, what factors could require an escalation of care, and how spasticity contributes positively or negatively to patients’ overall mobility.

Symptom Management: Dizziness

4. Symptom Management: Dizziness

Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in managing dizziness and improving balance in patients with MS. This chapter will explore common causes of dizziness, such as central vestibular signs, visual impairments, postural intolerance, and strategies for management.
