This short, scenario-based interactive course prepares hospice aides to support patients and families during one of the most difficult times they will face. Aides will learn to recognize common signs of decline and the dying process, respond to family questions with empathy while staying within their scope of practice, and understand their role when patients refuse food or fluids.

Course Objectives

  1. Recognize common signs of decline and active dying, and respond to family questions with empathy and within your scope of practice
  2. Understand the aide’s role when patients refuse food or fluids, and when families raise questions about care decisions
  3. Recognize anticipatory grief in family members and identify appropriate ways to offer support while maintaining professional boundaries
