All pelvic floor muscles attach to the coccyx, yet many physical and occupational therapists treating pelvic floor disorders have not undergone specific training to examine the coccyx or provide treatment for impairments relating to the coccyx. This course will examine the importance of the coccyx to the function of the pelvic floor muscles and discuss how coccyx impairments may contribute to pelvic floor muscle disorders. PTs and OTs will learn direct coccyx examination techniques to identify coccyx impairments. Therapeutic treatment options for coccyx impairments will be explored and demonstrated for immediate clinical application.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Anatomy and Evaluation of the Coccyx in Relation to the Pelvic Floor Muscles
This chapter will review the anatomy of the pelvic floor and the coccyx. Understanding the kinematics of the sacrococcygeal joint is key to understanding and evaluating pelvic floor muscle function and dysfunction.
2. Impairments of the Coccyx
Impairments in the mobility of the sacrococcygeal joint may directly impact pelvic floor muscle function and lead to dysfunction. Learners will differentiate between normal mobility, hypomobility, and hypermobility of the sacrococcygeal joint. The relationship between coccyx impairments and pain will be explored.
3. Treatment of Coccyx-Related Impairments
In this chapter, manual therapy treatments for coccyx-related impairments will be demonstrated. PTs and OTs will learn strategies for reducing coccyx-related pain, including cushions and taping techniques. Therapeutic exercises designed to address coccyx dysfunctions will be shown.
