Kathryn Brewer
PT, DPT, MEd, Geriatric Clinical Specialist Emeritus
Dr. Brewer graduated with her degree in physical therapy from The Ohio State University and received her Master of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati. Her doctorate degree is from Temple University. She has been certified as a geriatric specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists since 1994. Dr. Brewer recently retired from 17 years at Mayo Clinic in Arizona filling the role of therapy clinical education specialist. She is the founder of the Physical Therapy Geriatric Residency at Mayo Clinic in 2013. She holds academic rank in the Mayo College of Medicine as assistant professor and is a senior fellow in the Academy of Educational Excellence. She was awarded the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Allied Health Educator of the Year award in 2015.
Dr. Brewer has been in practice 47 years as clinician and educator in a variety of settings, including acute care, outpatient care, home care, long-term care/SNF, and public health programs with an emphasis on geriatric care, education, and administration. She has been a frequent author and presenter on these topics in local, state, and national PT and community educational programs. Her priorities in professional initiatives are to affect practice, awareness, advocacy, and service delivery of care to older adult patients and clients. Her areas of clinical expertise include osteoporosis, fall prevention, health promotion, functional assessment, and chronic disease management/wellness in older adults. She continues to be active in APTA Geriatrics and APTA residency education events and initiatives.
