Pain is pervasive in neurological rehabilitation, yet it remains one of the most underassessed and undertreated barriers to recovery. For clinicians working with patients after stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, or limb loss, the challenge isn’t just recognizing pain. It’s knowing how to evaluate it, explain it, and address it within the context of neurorehabilitation.

Part 1 of this two-part series provides the clinical foundation you need. Drawing on modern pain neuroscience and rehabilitation science, you’ll gain a practical understanding of pain epidemiology in neurological populations, the mechanisms underlying nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain, and how neuroplasticity contributes to persistent pain after neurological injury. You’ll also be introduced to pain phenotyping and the emerging evidence for pain neuroscience education as a tool to improve movement, participation, and rehabilitation outcomes.
