1. Life Is Challenging
This chapter introduces the topic of stress and its adverse effects on health. Stress-related health conditions and neuroplastic brain changes will be reviewed.
2. What Is Mindfulness?
This chapter introduces mindful awareness, mindful attitudes, and styles of mindfulness meditation training. Formal and informal mindfulness training practices will be presented.
3. Sitting Meditation
Participants are guided in a mindful breathing exercise. A video clip of a health care provider talking about the benefits of mindful breathing will be included.
4. Mindfulness: Proposed Mechanisms
This chapter discusses proposed mechanisms driving the effectiveness of mindfulness in managing stress. These are attention regulation, body awareness, emotional regulation, and changes in perspective on self.
5. Mindful Movement and Body Scan
Participants are introduced to walking meditation and guided through mindful movement and body scan exercises. A video clip of a health care provider talking about the benefits of mindful body awareness will be included.
6. Mindfulness Research
This chapter discusses research on the benefits of mindfulness training for health care providers. The role of mindfulness in mediating physiological markers of stress, in telomere maintenance, and in neuroplastic brain changes will be included.
7. Applying Mindfulness to Stressful Situations
This chapter offers a practical model and specific recommendations for bringing mindfulness to a stressful situation. Observation and modulation of physical, cognitive, and emotional reactions will be discussed.
8. Mindfulness in Daily Life
This chapter offers specific recommendations for bringing mindfulness into daily life. Ideas to bring mindfulness into home and work settings will be presented. A video clip of a health care provider talking about the benefits of mindful awareness will be included.
9. Cultivating Kindness
This chapter introduces and reviews research on the topic of kindness meditation. A guided kindness meditation that promotes positive emotional states will be offered.
10. Resources
This chapter offers resources for further instruction in mindful awareness, including books, organizations, and online resources. Opportunities for professional training and certification will be included.
