Nonfinancial: Therese E. Johnston is a coauthor on the Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) on ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) poststroke. She has presented material related to the CPG at multiple conferences.
Financial: Lisa E. Brown receives compensation from MedBridge for this course. She also received an honorarium from the Academy of Geriatric PT and Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy.
Nonfinancial: Lisa E. Brown is a coauthor on the Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) on ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) poststroke. She has presented material related to the CPG at multiple conferences.
This course will discuss the principles of AFO and FES use to address gait deficits and function poststroke, including AFO design features and electrical stimulation parameters. A patient-centered decision-making framework will be demonstrated through clinical case examples.
Learning Objectives
- Determine gait deficits that may benefit from AFO or FES
- Analyze AFO and FES features
- Apply AFO and FES principles to select an appropriate device
- Prioritize AFO types and FES for patients poststroke based on gait deficits and the physical therapy examination

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Gait Deficits Appropriate for AFO and FES Use
In this chapter, the instructors will discuss how AFO and FES can impact gait and the appropriate use of AFO and FES for gait deficit.
2. Ankle-Foot Orthosis Types and Features
This chapter will describe AFO properties and how these properties impact gait and function.
3. Functional Electrical Stimulation Use and Parameters
This chapter will describe FES and how its use and parameters impact gait and function.
4. AFO and FES Decision-Making
In this final chapter, the instructors will guide clinicians through AFO and FES decision-making.
