Applications in the Science of Aging for the Rehabilitation
Professional (Recorded Webinar)
Presented by Mike Studer
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard Medbridge courses.
How is it that some people seem to age more slowly, live longer, or remain active later in life? Is it just luck? Are these individuals blessed with "good genes"? Science continues to ask the question about aging, “Is aging due to nature (our genes) or nurture (our lifestyle)?” A related question is now directed at our healthspan – how long can we live without disability or illness? This course provides you with practical strategies that we can choose for ourselves to effect a change in healthspan across five categories of life: physical activity, sleep, nutrition, social connection, and the health benefits of extreme experiences.
Learning Objectives
- Assess the contemporary science of choice, belief, and self-efficacy in influencing healthspan and lifespan decisions
- Evaluate the contemporary science of aging, emphasizing cellular and systemic physiological processes
- Synthesize contemporary research on physical activity as medicine to enhance healthspan and lifespan outcomes
- Critique the science of nutrition, sleep, and social connections in relation to healthspan and lifespan optimization
- Design personalized programs incorporating physical activity, nutrition, sleep hygiene, social connections, and novel experiences to maximize health outcomes
- Formulate strategies leveraging the science of novel experiences to optimize individual healthspan and occupational performance

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Permitting—Not Prescribing, Pandering, or Punishing: The Science of Choice
This chapter will empower attendees with the science AND applications of behavioral economics through choice, belief, and self-efficacy.
2. Aging: The Facts and Myths
In this chapter, we will provide updates on the true physiology of aging. Attendees will be empowered to understand and apply the biopsychosocial influences on and myths in expectations of aging.
3. It’s Physical Activity (Not Exercise) That Is the Best Medicine
This chapter reveals the differences between physical activity and exercise, providing attendees with actionable steps to improve both in a person-specific manner. The chapter continues by identifying the opportunities through physiologic connections between physical activity and aging.
4. Advancing Healthspan Through Our Sleep, Nutrition, and Social Levers
This chapter identifies the physiology and scientific links between aging and sleep, rest, play, and social connection. The chapter additionally provides the scientific connections, through physiology, between nutrition and aging.
5. The Tools and Techniques: Applications for the Clinic, Home, and Office Visit
This chapter empowers practitioners with the applications underpinned through human decision-making as a science. Participants will learn how to effect long-term change through engagement, gamification, nudge, and loss aversion.
6. A Surprising Bonus: The Science of Novel Experiences
This chapter will reveal the physiology and applications of dopamine science as related to aging with health. Attendees will learn the benefits of participating in activities outside of one’s comfort zone with thermal interventions, and the benefits of cognitive, psychological, and taking on intentional challenges.
7. Question and Answer Session
This chapter is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by Amber Richardson.
