Chapters & learning objectives
1. Diagnosis, Etiology and Neurological Requisites
In the first chapter of this course, instructor Jenny L. Clark discusses the evolution of diagnosis from Asperger Syndrome to HFASD. Participants will learn the functions of the sensory systems and experience sensory processing challenges through simulated activities.
2. Sensory Components
Jenny L. Clark reviews the seven sensory systems. The explanation of each sensory system is followed by a simulation activity to illustrate their functions and characteristics.
3. Diagnosis, Etiology, and Sensory Challenges
In this chapter, participants will discern sensory symptoms in HFASD with evidential support and scrutinize the impact of sensory processing difficulties on childhood occupations for children with HFASD. This chapter also provides an overview of how occupational therapy is utilized when working with children with ASD.
4. Interventions at School
Participants will explore problem-solving approaches for helping children with HFASD at school and in the community. They will develop a repertoire of strategies that address success in childhood occupations for children with HFASD. Jenny L. Clark demonstrates how to implement sensory techniques to help children with HFASD gain independence in activities of daily living.
5. Interventions at Home
In the final chapter of this course, participants will review problem-solving approaches for helping children with HFASD at home. They will develop a repertoire of strategies that address success in childhood occupations for children with HFASD, and will understand how to facilitate solutions for functional independence for children with HFASD.
