Though hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) get a significant amount of attention, the upper extremity is a significant source of OA-related disability. This lecture will provide an overview of UE OA with a particular emphasis on the shoulder and the hand.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the clinical findings associated with OA in the joints of the upper extremity
- Determine the current evidence surrounding the use of exercise in the treatment of upper extremity OA
- Distinguish the current evidence surrounding the use of manual therapy in the treatment of upper extremity OA
- Examine the postoperative precautions for standard and reverse glenohumeral arthroplasty
- Implement an appropriate postoperative rehabilitation protocol for those patients undergoing glenohumeral joint replacement
- Implement conservative and postsurgical rehabilitation for other joints of the upper extremity to facilitate patient participation in daily activities
