Though hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) get a significant amount of attention, the upper extremity is a significant source of OA-related disability. This lecture will provide an overview of UE OA with a particular emphasis on the shoulder and the hand.

  • Determine the current evidence surrounding the use of exercise in the treatment of upper extremity OA
  • Distinguish the current evidence surrounding the use of manual therapy in the treatment of upper extremity OA
  • Examine the postoperative precautions for standard and reverse glenohumeral arthroplasty
  • Implement an appropriate postoperative rehabilitation protocol for those patients undergoing glenohumeral joint replacement
  • Implement conservative and postsurgical rehabilitation for other joints of the upper extremity to facilitate patient participation in daily activities
