Management of pain is one of the most important aspects of caring for a home patient. If you cannot get the patients pain managed effectively, it not only affects the patients ability to safely care for his/her own needs, eat, and sleep, but also affects the overall quality of life. In dealing with a home patient, pain management can be a very tricky task, but not impossible. Effective management of pain aides in all facets of life and improves the patients overall outlook. This course will discuss the basics of pain management and tools necessary to both assess and treat pain.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Introduction to Pain Management and Care
In this chapter, we will introduce the agenda and learning objectives for this course and present an example of a scenario you may encounter in your work with patients.
2. Types and Symptoms of Pain
This chapter will define pain and the different categories of pain based on cause, along with the key to effective pain control. It will also introduce tools used in assessment of pain based on the patients abilities to include verbal and non-verbal pain.
3. Home Care Considerations for Patients Experiencing Pain
This section will discuss personal care considerations when caring for a patient with chronic pain. This chapter will review some treatments for pain and how this will affect the home care patients safety in activities of daily living.
4. Putting it All Together: Documentation and Case Scenario
This chapter discusses important assessment tips to include in documentation and what important items are to be documented when both assessing and administering pain medications.
