Chronic work stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout have swept the health care world by storm. Health care professionals coming from different disciplines, settings, and levels of experience are impacted by burnout. If these conditions go unresolved, they pose a threat to individuals’ physical and mental health, negatively disrupt work teams and organizations, and yield consequences that impact patient safety and satisfaction. This introductory course provides health care workers across all settings with evidence-based research and approaches to create and/or modify new workplace wellness strategies and implement preventative strategies to reduce negative outcomes and promote optimal work well-being and work–life integration. This course provides you with basic information, awareness, and an introduction to multilevel solutions to address chronic work stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. How Burnout, Stress, and Compassion Fatigue Develop
Ever wondered how burnout can spiral out of control? Do you know the differences between compassion fatigue and burnout, or how stress can be detrimental to your health? In this chapter, we explore these conditions in depth, including their definitions, how they develop, and the personal and professional outcomes.
2. Personality, Lifestyle, Coping Strategies, and Resources
Ditch the idea of work–life balance, and instead go for work–life integration. The way in which you take care of yourself outside of work can directly impact your performance and well-being at work, and vice versa. In this chapter, we discuss personal factors and strategies that can impact your work–life satisfaction and well-being.
3. Recovery Time: Sleep and Energy
Did you know that burnout can significantly impact sleep? Sleep is essential for good health. In this chapter, we discuss the bidirectional relationship between burnout and insomnia, the four chronotypes, and the importance of implementing a sleep strategy specific to your chronotype.
4. Fixing Stress and Burnout at Work
Despite popular belief, burnout is more of a social phenomenon than an individual one. In this chapter, we explore the work factors that contribute to chronic work stress and burnout and strategies to address these issues at the team and organizational level.
5. Team Organizational Energy and Leadership
The single most important factor in team success or failure is the quality of relationships with the team. In this chapter, we look under the hood at the mechanisms that can energize or de-energize a team, along with strategies to enhance leadership and build up positive organizational energy.
