Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in adults is a problem that has significant negative impact on quality of life and function. CIPN affects a large percentage of cancer patients and is well-suited to rehabilitation interventions. Despite this, CIPN has been underappreciated in rehabilitation education. This introductory course provides background information about CIPN and establishes the foundation necessary for the series’ subsequent courses on evaluation and treatment of CIPN in adults. This course includes videotaped interviews with people who have CIPN and highlights their experiences with the diagnosis. This course is informational to nurses and is applicable to occupational therapists and physical therapists in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient hospitals, outpatient private practices, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, home health, and hospice environments.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize CIPN in adults
- Define the impact that CIPN can have on ADLs and social participation in adults
- Recall the pathogenic explanations for CIPN in adults
- Differentiate between nerve pain and nerve impairment in adults with CIPN
- Identify three chemotherapy agents associated with CIPN in adults
- Name two concepts of neuroplasticity in the realm of sensory rehabilitation

Chapters & learning objectives
1. CIPN Introduction and Background
This chapter defines CIPN and identifies its impact on ADLs and social participation in adults. These important details have been overlooked in rehabilitation education.
2. Key Elements of the Peripheral Nervous System as They Relate to CIPN
This chapter presents an overview of peripheral nerve terminology and pathogenic explanations for CIPN. It includes videotaped interviews with patients describing their symptoms and their experiences with CIPN. This chapter is important because it establishes the foundation necessary for clinical reasoning in our treatment of CIPN.
3. Incidence and Implications of CIPN
This chapter explains the various chemotherapeutic agents associated with CIPN and discusses the dose-limiting effects that CIPN can have on treatment. It ends with summarizing thoughts and prepares the attendee for subsequent chapters on evaluation and treatment of CIPN.
