This course provides learners with a concise introduction to elemental conversational and medical Spanish. It is designed for health professionals at all levels and utilizes low-pressure, incremental acquisition learning strategies. The course includes a basic review of fundamental rules of grammar, followed by introduction of conversational words and phrases used by clinicians to greet, intake, treat, and conclude professional interactions with Hispanic patients having limited English proficiency. Role-play exercises with a native Spanish speaker include ambulation with assistive devices (crutches and walker), appointment cancellation, pain evaluation, and coronavirus dialogue. Useful words and phrases are collected in an easy-to-use two-way glossary for ready later reference.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Introduction to Learning Conversational Medical Span(gl)ish
This chapter highlights the pervasiveness of Spanish language and culture in the United States and examines how much Spanish most people already know. A preassessment evaluates existing knowledge of listeners and builds on that to augment Spanish words and phrases. A segment on patient-informed consent is included.
2. Grammar/La Gramática
The chapter addresses the basics—just the basics—of Spanish grammar. The simple nature of Spanish vowel pronunciation is analyzed and practiced by listeners. Two key verbs—ser and estar—are introduced, and readers learn to conjugate them. Both verbs mean “to be” but are utilized in different contexts.
3. Medical Communications
This chapter explores fundamental medical communications. It commences with initial sentences and progresses through dialogue on muscle testing and crutch walking. The chapter concludes with an overview of articles of clothing in Spanish.
4. Role-Play Exercises
The chapter includes simulated role-play exercises with a non-Spanish-speaking rehab professional and a native Spanish speaker. Specific topic areas include patient evaluation, ambulation using assistive devices, appointment cancellation, and a dialogue with a patient concerning coronavirus.
