What if you knew there was a resource at your organization that protected you legally? What if you knew not using this resource put you at risk? In your day-to-day activities, policies and procedures should be your go-to resource for what to do in almost every situation. From how to request paid time off to how to handle a suicidal patient, policies and procedures define specific courses of action to take. It may seem easier to just ask a coworker or supervisor how to handle a situation, but by doing that, you may lose the protections you have. This course reviews the best ways to use policies and procedures to protect yourself, your license, and the patients you serve.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. What Is a Policy?
Policies and procedures define expectations, responsibilities, and roles. They provide guidance that allows us to practice within the myriad laws, rules, and regulations that govern the healthcare industry. This chapter looks at the role of policies in our day-to-day activities and the importance of knowing how to use them.
2. Why Do I Care?
Policies are not meant to protect only the company. They provide significant protections for the people who work there. Policies define our roles and our actions based on various situations. Failure to follow policies can result in disciplinary actions and, even worse, patient harm and potential legal liability.
3. Real-World Examples
This chapter examines real events that resulted from not following organizational policies. Three case reviews will be done to help highlight the protections afforded by following policies.
