Autoimmune conditions can range from bothersome to life-threatening. In this intermediate course, autoimmune conditions will be reviewed so that the physical therapist can improve their recognition and response to autoimmune conditions and their implications.
Learning Objectives
- Determine initial symptoms that may coincide with an autoimmune flare
- Develop a plan for response to a patient with signs and symptoms of axial spondyloarthropathy
- Analyze a patient presentation in order to identify risk factors of systemic autoimmune conditions
- Determine signs and symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica
- Distinguish neurological symptoms that may be orthopedic from those that may suggest multiple sclerosis

1. Autoimmune Review
In this chapter, we’ll review the symptoms that may coincide with an autoimmune flare.

2. Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
This chapter introduces axial spondyloarthropathy (axSpA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), from early recognition to management, in order to help the primary care physical therapist.

3. Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis
This chapter introduces two of the most potentially severe systemic autoimmune conditions side by side in order to compare their presentations and management.

4. Polymyalgia Rheumatica
This chapter features the most common chronic inflammatory condition in older adults. It reviews signs and symptoms, treatment, and potential emergent scenarios.

5. Multiple Sclerosis
This chapter reviews one of the most common local autoimmune conditions affecting the nervous system, including early signs that may warrant referral.
