Rates of mental illness continue to increase in the United States while many healthcare professionals remain underprepared to address the accompanying symptoms and crises. When working in homes and communities, home health practitioners are often placed in a unique situation of being the first, and often only, healthcare provider to be present during a mental health crisis. Thus, home healthcare providers (therapy professionals, nursing, and social work) need to be trained to intervene and address issues of mental illness and substance use when they arise. This course aims to provide quick tips for providers who enter the home and other community contexts to address mental health crises. Issues of substance use, suicidality, and crisis intervention will be addressed.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the signs that an individual is having a mental health crisis
- Identify appropriate methods to intervene in a mental health crisis
- Compare methods of intervening in a mental health crisis when substance use may be present
- List methods of intervention when suicidality is present
