Everyday healthcare and social service providers are presented with complex situations that require high-level communication skills to navigate. However, most practitioners are provided with little training during their education and in their continuing education on communication techniques. In particular, for those practitioners working in the home health environment (therapy, nursing, and social work), the solitary nature of the environment often requires that a practitioner be prepared to handle conversations on their own, in real time. Thus, the goal of this course is to add to a practitioner’s base level of knowledge regarding boundary setting and navigating difficult conversations in healthcare. Practitioners will learn strategies for limit setting, conflict resolution, and engaging in conversations on sensitive topics.
Learning Objectives
- List strategies for setting limits with clients
- Identify strategies for handling conflict between the clinician and the client
- Highlight strategies for handling conflicts between clients and family members
- Recognize strategies for engaging in conversations around sensitive or difficult topics with clients and family members
