Seeing Red? Pediatric Red Flags Part 2: Cardiopulmonary, Integumentary, Urogenital, and
Musculoskeletal/Orthopedic Systems (Recorded Webinar)
Presented by Venita Lovelace-Chandler
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard Medbridge courses.
This webinar, part 2 of a 2-part series for pediatric therapists and assistants, continues to emphasize the importance of a quick screening of systems for symptoms, signs, and red flags as part of the examination of children from birth to 21 years or when new symptoms or signs appear. Part 2 gives therapists and therapist assistants the tools to quickly screen additional systems to recognize findings outside of their scope of practice. The function of each system is briefly described, and case examples are used to analyze red flags for the cardiopulmonary, integumentary, urogenital, and musculoskeletal systems. Completion of both webinars will give learners confidence in screening all systems, recognizing red flags, and knowing when to refer patients to other professionals.
Learning Objectives
- Distinguish red flags from cautionary and typical findings for the cardiopulmonary, integumentary, urogenital, and musculoskeletal systems using best practices
- Conduct a functional review of each system to screen for potential red flags
- Determine when referral is warranted based on case-based red flag findings
- Determine how interactions among cardiopulmonary, integumentary, urogenital, and musculoskeletal systems contribute to red flag identification
- Identify how red flags in the cardiopulmonary, integumentary, urogenital, and musculoskeletal systems can affect a child's ability to participate in daily occupations such as mobility, toileting, and school activities

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Screening the Cardiopulmonary System
In this chapter, learners will apply concepts related to the function of the cardiopulmonary system based on a child’s age to anticipate common signs and symptoms. Recognizing and analyzing the red flags for this system will help learners recognize when to refer patients to other practitioners.
2. Screening the Integumentary System
In Chapter 2, learners will apply concepts related to the function of the integumentary system to anticipate common diagnoses, signs, and symptoms. Recognizing and analyzing the red flags for this system will help learners recognize when to refer patients to other practitioners.
3. Screening the Urogenital System
In Chapter 3, learners will apply concepts related to the function of the urogenital system to anticipate common diagnoses, signs, and symptoms. Recognizing and analyzing the red flags for this system will help learners recognize when to refer patients to other practitioners.
4. Musculoskeletal System Screening and Interactions of Systems
In Chapter 4, learners will apply concepts related to the function of the musculoskeletal system to anticipate common diagnoses, signs, and symptoms. Recognizing and analyzing the red flags for this system will help learners recognize when to refer patients to other practitioners. Learners will also review all six systems discussed in Parts 1 and 2 of the webinars and consider interactions between systems.
5. Question and Answer Session
In this chapter, the presenter will address questions and facilitate a conversation about the cardiopulmonary, integumentary, urogenital, and musculoskeletal/orthopedic systems in pediatrics.
