Writing Goals: Empowering Clients and Sustaining
Therapists (Recorded Webinar)
Presented by Neely Sullivan
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard Medbridge courses.
Writing therapy goals should feel like a compass, not a chore. This practical webinar helps practitioners craft SMART, client-centered goals that improve outcomes, reduce documentation fatigue, and bring meaning back to your work. Across acute care, outpatient, skilled nursing, and home health settings, goal writing looks different, but the principles that make it effective don’t change. You’ll leave with real-world tools and evidence-based strategies to write goals that are measurable, individualized, and built to guide care rather than satisfy a checkbox. Just as importantly, you’ll explore how thoughtful goal writing can serve as a protective factor against burnout and emotional exhaustion, helping you stay engaged, effective, and sustainable in your practice for the long haul.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Why Goals Matter
This chapter establishes the foundational importance of goal writing as the clinical compass that guides treatment decisions, documentation, and discharge planning. Participants examine the consequences of weak goals and explore how functional, outcome-driven goals support interdisciplinary communication and defensible care.
2. Mastering SMART Goals
This chapter provides an in depth review of SMART goal criteria and demonstrates how each component supports clinical clarity and accountability. Participants apply SMART principles across multiple care settings, including acute care, post acute care, home health, outpatient care, pediatrics, and nursing-driven practice.
3. Writing Functional Goals
This chapter focuses on translating clinical reasoning into functional, client-centered goals that reflect real world participation and daily routines. Participants learn a structured framework for writing measurable goals while avoiding common pitfalls that reduce clarity and carryover.
4. Goals, Documentation, and Burnout
This chapter connects the quality of goal writing to documentation efficiency, professional sustainability, and burnout prevention. Participants explore discipline-specific burnout patterns and practical strategies for writing goals that reduce rework, support audits, and strengthen clinical confidence.
