Spanish-Speaking Children With Highly Unintelligible Speech
Presented by Raul F. Prezas
Non-Financial: Raul Prezas is an ASHA member and developed and collected data on Spanish intervention approach and assessments that are discussed in the courses.
A child’s ability to communicate and be understood by others is critical for early academic success. Children with reduced intelligibility (e.g., unintelligible speech) comprise the largest number of individuals on clinical caseloads in US schools, and data regarding children who speak other languages (e.g., Spanish) is sparse. This course provides a framework for phonological intervention for both monolingual Spanish and bilingual Spanish-English children. Topics will include the concept of shared versus unshared sounds, selecting optimal target patterns, and additional recommendations for bilingual children with highly unintelligible speech.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Overview of Bilingual Speech Sound Assessment
In order to make prognostic decisions related to phonological intervention, it is important to understand speech sound assessment with bilingual populations. This chapter provides an overview of working with bilingual children along with a discussion of important assessment considerations.
2. Overview of Bilingual Phonological Intervention
This chapter provides general information related to the bilingual phonological intervention. Bilingual phonological acquisition theories, information related to stimulability, dialectal considerations, and earlier acquiring versus complex sounds are discussed.
3. A Pattern-Oriented Approach for Bilingual Children
Phonological intervention for bilingual children with highly unintelligible speech involves careful consideration of many factors. This chapter provides information related to a pattern-oriented approach for phonological intervention.
4. Case Study
This chapter provides a case study that follows a Spanish pattern-oriented approach. Posttherapy data is explored along with summary recommendations for bilingual phonological intervention.
