1. Definition and Radiological Variables in Adult Scoliosis
This chapter will explain the difference between adults who have AIS and adults who have adult-onset degenerative scoliosis. Published research will be referenced top explain multiple complex radiological variables in adult scoliosis patients that can relate to quality of life. Examples of adult scoliosis symptoms and complexities will be given.
2. Physical Therapy Planning
The incidence of adult scoliosis is growing, and education in basic physical therapy planning and coordination of care for is important for all therapists. This chapter will discuss suggested physical therapy guidelines for adults with scoliosis in order for the reader to improve coordination of care and decision making when caring for adults with scoliosis. Suggestions for entry level treatment ideas using sagittal plane, respiration strategies, and stability will be given along with physical therapy modifications and precautions for adults with scoliosis. As with AIS and Hyperkyphosis, therapists seeing adults with scoliosis should ideally have specific continuing education or refer to trained therapists when indicated.
3. Adult Case Reviews
This chapter will present two detailed case histories of adults with scoliosis, and share 3 adult cases presented at the 2010 SOSORT conference – educational session. Examination, care planning, treatment interventions, and outcomes will be described.
