Appropriate assessment and treatment planning when working with clients with dementia requires that the healthcare professional possess an understanding of the diagnoses included under dementia and be able to describe the cognitive areas impacted by each pathology. This course describes the different types of dementia, how to assess cognitive function, and the impact of dementia on function.

1. Dementia, Delirium, and Other Causes of Cognitive Decline
In Chapter 1, we will define common terminology around dementia and cognitive decline. The diagnoses that lead to dementia and cognitive decline will be characterized, and the characteristics of each diagnosis will be highlighted.
2. Clinical Features of the Major Types of Dementia
In this chapter, the four major types of dementia are compared and contrasted. Functional impacts of each disease are characterized.
3. Screening and Assessment for Cognitive Decline and Dementia
This chapter covers how dementia is diagnosed. The use of screening tools for cognitive decline and dementia and their interpretation are discussed, as well as how to interpret findings from administering these tools.
